Kodiak Brown Bear. Kodiak Backcountry Adventures

Kodiak Island Brown Bear

Kodiak Island is home to the largest Brown Bears on earth, and our hunts take place on both Alaska State lands and the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. All permits are issued through the Alaska State drawing process. We offer three spring hunt areas with historically strong draw success, making these hunts an excellent opportunity for those seeking a world class bear.

Applications are due December 15, with permits awarded in February. Spring hunts begin in mid April and run for twelve days.

Your adventure starts the moment you arrive. You will be picked up at the Kodiak airport and taken to the local sporting goods store for any last-minute gear and to purchase your license and locking tag. From there, we will stop at the ADF&G office to complete required administrative paperwork before preparing to fly into Base Camp.

Your Experience

Custom backpack by Jason Bunch carrying a Kodiak Brown Bear

Your hunt will take place in one of Kodiak’s long, remote drainages that run toward saltwater, classic high density Brown Bear country. Expect full days of glassing from multiple vantage points, studying terrain, and covering ground with purpose. Depending on your specific hunt area, nights will be spent in the base camp cabin, a base camp style tent, or a backpack spike tent. These strategies allow us to stay mobile, maximize time in the field, and effectively hunt vast stretches of bear habitat.

Hunters should be prepared to carry twenty-five to thirty pounds throughout the hunt, regardless of the day’s plan. This weight ensures you have the essentials needed for safety, mobility, and success.

Once your bear is taken and removed from the field, we provide full trophy care including fleshing, salting, and drying the hide. After preparation, your trophy will be shipped to the destination of your choice.
